Camping (Glamping) Safaris

Camping accommodation in large canvas bow tents that you can stand up in, on comfortable foam mattresses with sheets, pillows & sleeping bags if required.

Our personal favorite way of experiencing the park since we can book into the rustic camps like Tsendze and Balule, small camps with stunning ablutions but no electricity and you really feel like you are truly on Safari in the bush.

These safaris are participatory and we appreciate our guests pitching their own tents, it only takes 5 minutes and is very easy and helping with some simple camp chores...nothing too strenuous though.

TENTS

The tents are sturdy canvas dome tents, totally waterproof and tall enough to stand up in. They have large windows for ventilation and built in ground sheets.

They take only 5 minutes to erect with two people and you won't even break a sweat.

MATTRESSES

We use high density canvas-covered foam mattresses that are very comfortable. They are 700mm wide and long enough for even tall people. They have fitted sheets and we supply a pillow for each person on safari.

CAMP CHAIRS

Sturdy but very comfortable camp chairs rated to carry up to 155kg. They are quick to set up and pack up.

Detailed Accommodation Description

We book camp sites in both main rest camps & rustic bush camps to really get you close to nature...it is our opinion that camping is the best way to experience the Kruger Park...you hear & experience the sound, smells & creatures of the night unlike the more formal budget & mid-range accommodation where when you close the door & turn on the air-conditioner .

Typical Safari Itinerary

  • DAY 1 - 07H00 depart OR Tambo for Kruger Park Malelane Gate, travel time 5 Hours. We have lunch at Malelane Gate before making our way North West on our first Game Drive to either Pretoriuskop or Berg-en-Dal Rest Camps where we will overnight. The game density in this area of the Park is high and this is where we are most likely to find Rhino (there is a Rhino Museum in Pretoriuskop Rest Camp) as well as various plains game...Impala, Zebra, Giraffe & Kudu abound. All of the big 5 occur in this area of the park, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino, Lion & Leopard. The Matjulu Watehole near Berg-en-Dal is always a game hotspot. We have dinner al fresco style in camp.

Overnight Pretoriuskop/Berg-en-Dal

  • DAY 2 - 05H30 wake up call with coffee & rusks ready for you, then a breakfast of special muesli & fresh yogurt on the game vehicle to save time and since not everyone likes to eat so early in the morning. The morning drive, around 140 Km (6 Hours) gets us to Satara Rest Camp around 12H00 where we prepare lunch. The route is fantastic since it follows various rivers and passes many waterholes & pans where game congregates to drink. Since we will only be going out at 15H00 for the afternoon drive this gives us plenty time to relax whether in the park shop, at the pool or a siesta in our accommodation. The afternoon drive is from 15H00 until the late afternoon. We again have dinner al fresco style in camp. Weather permitting we will point out a few constellations in the night sky. If you want to do a night drive or bush walk you are in the perfect place.

Overnight Satara

  • DAY 3 - 05H30 wake up with the usual morning coffee & breakfast routine. Satara is a big game hotspot & referred to as big cat central...all the cats and most of the larger mammals are regularly seen here so if possible we always book a double nighter here. Satara has a choice of great hides, rivers, dams and waterholes to explore. The terrain is also very varied and is the reason why this is the area of the park where it is most likely to spot the big 5 on one day. There is a lovely swimming pool in camp and a waterhole just outside the fence where elephants and plains game come to drink. There are resident Scops Owls and, at only 19 cm tall fully grown, they are just fantastic to behold. The usual midday siesta in camp after lunch when the game are having their midday siesta in the bush. Then back out in the cooler afternoon for a late drive. The most spectacular sunsets in the park occur here in Satara. A sumptuous dinner in camp.

Overnight Satara

  • DAY 4 - 05H30 wake up, we know the routine by now. Today we head a little North into Mopane country and head for Letaba Rest Camp (alternatively Olifants Rest Camp). Letaba has the fabled elephant hall museum, a tribute to the incredible "Tuskers" that have roamed the park through the ages and you will be amazed. During the midday break  after lunch, you will be able to visit this museum. Letaba has a lovely swimming pool & park shop where you can browse for curios. The afternoon drive takes us over the Letaba river where we may alight from the vehicle on the bridge and see all sorts of mammals, birds and reptiles in the river below. Dinner will again be freshly prepared in camp.

Overnight Letaba/Olifants

  • DAY 5 -  05H30 and you know the rest. We continue to explore the Letaba / Olifants area of the park. The views from Olifants Rest Camp perched high on a hill overlooking the Olifants River are just spectacular. The Letaba River holds many surprises and the views over the river from the patio will reveal many mammals and birds in the river bed, Marabou Storks, Hippo, Waterbuck and much more. The camp is a pure delight, heavily shaded with many huge trees it just exudes a cool relaxed atmosphere. We often get a chance to see & hear the Bush Babies (Galagos) here. After lunch we exit the Park and make our way up the spectacular Abel Erasmus Pass to Forever Resorts Blyde River Canyon (a sneak view point of the Three Rondawels), poised on the northern tip of the Panorama Route we are perfectly positioned to launch our Panorama Route tomorrow en-route back to Johannesburg.

Overnight Forever Resorts Blyde River Canyon

  • DAY 6 - So we can sleep in just a little, we only need to get going at around 07H00. First stop Three Rondawels, a spectacular view into the Blyde River Canyon. Then on to Bourkes Luck Potholes, an amazing geological feature. Next is God's Window and a very manageable walk into the rain forest. Then the Pinnacle another geological marvel. Last, but certainly not least, the fantastic MacMac Falls. Curios are offered by the local inhabitants along the route and you are welcome to browse. We now start the climb back onto the Highveld and head for Johannesburg stopping along the route for you to get lunch. We get you back to OR Tambo between 16H00 and 17H00 generally in good. In time for Cape Town or international flights
